Biography

Dr. Soylu was born in 1968, in Kayseri, Turkey. After receiving his B.S. degree from
Gazi University in 1988, he worked as an internal combustion engine instructor in
ministry of national education and ministry of national defense in Turkey. Then, he went
to U.S.A. in 1994 to Iowa State University of Science and Technology for his M.S. and
Ph.D education in Mechanical Engineering under supervision of Prof. Dr. Jon Van
Gerpen. His M.S. and Ph.D. research works focused on alternative fuels (natural gas and
bio-diesel) for internal combustion engines and thermodynamic engine modeling that
were supported by John Deere Product Engineering Center, and many other Industrial
and State organizations in the US. Through end of his Ph.D. study, Dr. Soylu worked for
Caterpillar Inc. as an analytical engineer in their technical center in Peoria, IL for the
development of the advanced diesel engines from 2000 to 2001. After receiving his
Ph.D. degree in 2001, Dr. Soylu joined to Sakarya University to perform research and
teach thermal science courses.
His research interests centered around the development of environmentally friendly road
transport vehicles by means of improving the efficiency and reducing emissions of IC
engines. His recent research has focused on SI combustion heat release analysis, natural
gas engine, autoignition modeling, zero-D,3-D diesel combustion modeling, HCCI
engine modeling, cooled EGR engine simulation, bio-fuels, real world road transport
emission measurement (by using PEMS) and inventorying. He is currently leading
Sakarya Air Quality Protection and Improvement (SAHAKK-I) research group. This
research group carries out an integrated research programme which deals with transport,
residential and industrial sourced air pollution, its health effects and corresponding
economic losses. The overall goal of SAHAKK-I research group is to provide technical
and scientific support to policy makers and relevant stakeholders for sustainable
development.
As Dr. Soylu was selected as independent expert by European Commission in the field of
Energy and Transport in 2003, he started evaluating and reviewing Framework
Programme (6 & 7th) projects on behalf of the Commission. Then a year later Dr. Soylu
went to Italy to work as a Visiting Scientist in the Joint Research Center of European
Commission for a year from November 2004 to November 2005 to provide technical and
scientific support to the policymakers of the Commission for their legislative works. His
work in the Joint Research Center focused on fuels for internal combustion engines,
exhaust emission measurement techniques for zero emission vehicles, portable emission
measurement systems, and small engines.
Dr. Soylu is currently an Associate Professor of Sakarya University and performing
research on sustainable transport and energy systems and teaching thermal science
courses. In addition he has been the Coordinator of Sakarya University for EU
Framework Programs with the aim of integrating Sakarya University to the European
Research Area since 2004.
